During his reign, Byzantine authority stretched from Southern Italy to the Euphrates. Meanwhile, the conversion of the Rus' of Kiev to Christianity in 988 expanded the influence of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and demonstrated the remarkable effectiveness of Byzantine ecclesiastical diplomacy."
